Yarm 1914

Killed in action 20 Oct 1914 aged 23. Youngest son of Arthur Garmondsway Waldy, MA who was Rector of Yarm from 1901 to his own death in 1915. He had been born at Horsley Woodhouse, Derby on 31 Aug 1891 and after attending Marlborough College from 1906 to Christmas 1909 was apprenticed to Messrs Huntley & Palmer at their biscuit factory in Reading. Possessed of great industry and ability and a man of much personal charm, he was highly esteemed by the directors. He was closely involved in the factory Recreation Club, being a good cricketer, a half back in the hockey team and having some interest in football. He promoted the works departmental cricket competition and was also honorary secretary of the cricket club. Waldy was also an officer in the St Johns company of the Church Lads Brigade. Gazetted to the Special Reserve of Officers in Aug 1912 he joined the 3rd York & Lancs in Aug 1914 before being transferred to the 2nd So Lancs when sent to the front in early Oct. On the 20th he had been wounded and a Capt Bagley dressed his wounds and urged him to take more cover. Soon after he was wounded again and Capt Bagley was also wounded and taken to hospital. He was later told that while a Serjeant Holt was binding Waldy’s wounds they were both shot dead. After the war the family presented the Parish Church with a carved oak altar in memory of this officer and this was placed in the Chapel in the north eastern corner of the Church, behind the organ. At the time of his death Waldy lived at 96 London Rd, Reading and it seems that he had only a family and not a personal connection with Yarm. Yarm1914 believe that Cuthbert Temple was born in 1892 in Horsley Woodhouse in Derbyshire. His father Arthur Garmonsway had been born in Egglescliffe in 1851 and in 1881 was incumbent at Horsley Woodhouse and lodging with the Jordan family. Caroline Newton born 1858 lived with her family in Potto Grange. later that year they married and set up home in Worsley Woodhome and started their family. John Newton was born in 1884, Violet Mary in 1888, Rowland Gray in 1890, Cuthbert Temple in 1892 and Dorothy Elizabeth in 1897. By 1901 Rowland and Cuthbert were at Riber Castle boys school in Matlock. The rest of the family were living at the vicarage in Horsley Woodhouse until Artur became rector of Yarm and was inducted the same year. By 1911 Arthur and Caroline were in Yarm, John Newton was married to Mabel Robson and living in Bellingham in Nothumberland as a farmer, Violet May was visiting her older brother, Rowland Gray was a boarder in Norfolk and training to be a farmer, Cuthbert was in a fever hospital in Reading and Dorothy Elizabeth was at school in Seaton Carew and boarding with the clergyman Revd Bickmore. Caroline's family had moved to Oswestry in Shropshire. In his will, Arthur who died on 6 March 1915 left £3883 1s 6d to Caroline and John his only surviving son. In St Mary Magdalene the oak altar is now in use in the Lady Chapel and the memory of his father remains.
